Chesapeake Bay Foundation is offering several opportunities for rising 9th through 12th graders regarding CBF’s upcoming 2020 Student Leadership Summer Expeditions as well as our student leadership program.
2020 Summer Leadership Opportunities for VA High School Students
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is offering multiple leadership experiences for high school students this summer. The Student Leadership Summer Expeditions are five-day immersion courses where students travel throughout the Commonwealth to investigate the connections between the natural and social systems that have shaped the past, present, and future of Virginia. Students will gain the skills to identify environmental issues and the knowledge to advocate, act, and spread awareness about those issues to make a positive impact on their local community and environment. Applications can be submitted online and will be accepted through March 31, 2020. All trips for VA students will begin and end in Richmond, VA and cost $100 (scholarships are available).
Background: Student Leadership Summer Expeditions that are just like our Chesapeake Classrooms courses but for students. They are not a summer camp, they are a professional development experience for students who are interested in continuing their education over the summer. But we aim to have fun and help students gain a greater appreciation for the natural resources that makes VA so unique. The June course will focus on environmental justice, the July course on advocacy, and the August course on Climate Change. If folks want to learn more about CBF’s Student Leadership or are unsure about committing to the year-round program, the SL Expeditions are a great way to test the waters. Year-round Leadership Program for VA High School Students
CBF’s Student Leadership Program is made up self-selecting high school students from across the state of Virginia who want to take the next step towards environmental stewardship. The program is open to rising 9th - 12th graders and runs year-round. The group convenes monthly at online meetings and at professional development and leadership opportunities throughout the year. During the summer, student leaders can participate in week-long field experiences that will take them to unique environments throughout the Commonwealth and the Chesapeake Bay. At all events, student learn, share personal experiences, and think critically about how they can make a positive impact on the Chesapeake Bay watershed by improving their local communities. Students accomplish their goals through the three pillars of Student Leadership: Advocacy, Action, and Awareness. Student’s will advocate on behalf of issues that matter to them, complete action projects that benefit their local environment, and spread awareness about the importance of clean air and water.
CBF recognizes the power of a student’s voice and the Student Leadership Program provides students a platform to amplify their voices and speak for their local river, streams, and ecosystems. We believe this is essential to achieving an equitable and sustainable environment for future generations. Students are able to apply online to join the Student Leadership Program.
